As experts in Computer Repair in Atlanta, GA, we like to think we know most things about computers. If you’re in the market for a new one, the choice is generally between a Laptop or a Desktop – your choices are almost limitless even after you choose between the two types, but that’s another story!
So, how to decide? Well, there are several factors to take into account. What will you be using the computer for? Where will it primarily be used? Will you want to upgrade components later on? We’ll try to help you decide by giving some pros, cons and general information about each type.
Laptops have several key advantages, such as portability, size, aesthetics etc. Laptops are designed to be carried around, used anywhere, and have a rechargeable battery so that it can be used without plugging into an outlet.
Modern laptops come with all sorts of specifications, from basic units with minimal memory and average performance, to high-end laptops with vast amounts of RAM, storage, and performance capabilities for gaming etc.
Some disadvantages, however, are things such as upgrades. Most components such as the processor and graphics card are integrated onto a motherboard, so aside from RAM, Optical Drive and Hard Drive upgrades, there is little that can be done to improve a laptop’s performance. Also most batteries only have a useable time frame of 4-6 hours, after which you need to plug into an outlet – which is not always possible if out and about!
Desktop PCs also have advantages. These are usually made up of 2 main components, the monitor and the ‘Tower’, the box that is the computer itself. Because it has a separate monitor, this means you can have almost any screen size you like, whereas a laptop will rarely be much bigger than 17″ for practical reasons. You can also have several screens attached to the same Desktop PC for increased viewing area. In our Atlanta Computer Repair office we have 22″ screens, much better than the 15.6″ laptop at home!
Desktop PCs also are extremely upgradeable, as all the components are built within the Tower unit. This means that you can install additional hard drives for more storage, upgrade the RAM, as well as upgrade things like the graphics and video cards. This means desktop computers can be made much more powerful than most laptops.
In addition, you can add Blu-ray AND CD-Rom drives, and there is plenty of space for multiple ports of all type.
Disadvantages of course would be that they are usually more expensive than a laptop equivalent, and you have to keep a Destop PC in a fixed location.
No matter your choice, i’m sure you will make the right one. Once you have decided, then comes the fun part – actually selecting the laptop or Desktop PC you want to buy! If you need any more advice, call our Atlanta Computer Repair office, we’re happy to help!
